An Examination of Conscience by Fr Robert Altier

This is THE book today’s Catholic needs to prepare for Confession and learn what the Church actually teaches about what actions are sinful—including which ones are gravely evil. Thank you Father Altier!!!

I thought this was an excellent and comprehensive examination. I had read Fathers book on Marriage and was inspired to get it from this work.

I listened to an interview on EWTN with Fr. Altier about this book. He has a gift for both speaking and writing in a relatable style, and he does it in his introduction to this Examination of Conscience booklet. What's even more important is that this Examination does something that no others do; it lists the mortal sins and the venial sins separately. If you are like me, you wonder if your sins are mortal or venial. This resource makes it clear, and it explains why. For me, this little book is a huge consolation that I am being instructed correctly, so I can have more hope that I am effectively clearing my soul in better Confessions and getting on a much better path. I bought this book in bulk and have shared it with family members and friends. By the way, Fr. Altier said he wrote this booklet for his parish as their pastor. He put out 1000 of them and they were gone in one weekend, and he has been offering them regularly. We who have been wanting better catechesis, can get some in this little booklet. Thankyou, Fr. Altier, for caring about our souls!

This little book is so good in explaining mortal and venal sins. It is a very thorough book going through all the Ten Commandments and the sins related to each.

This is a very helpful booklet.... very thorough and simple to understand. The introduction covers why we should confess to a human, how to go to confession and prayers before confession. The Examination of Conscience is divided into 3 parts: mortal sins, venial sins and imperfections and clear examples are given for all of the 10 commandments in each part. The conclusion includes prayers after confession. Our priest offered these to our parish and I have used mine for 3 years - at first as a daily help, now I just put a pencil check mark by my sin(s) each time and review before each confession. I have 11 siblings; I bought enough to send one to each during lent this Jubilee Year. I decided it was a perfect gift.
