During the month of October, we celebrate a whole plethora of special feast days. But did you know that the entire month is dedicated to the Holy Rosary? After the great victory at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571, Pope Pius V dedicated this day to honoring Our Lady of Victory. Pope Gregory XIII would eventually change the feast to Our Lady of the Rosary. We are all called to venerate Our Lady in a special way this month. Below you will find 5 ways to honor Our Lady During the month of the Holy Rosary.
Table of contents
Ask your family and friends to bring a dish to share and gather around to pray a rosary as a community. Before you begin the Rosary, light a candle and give everyone an opportunity to say any prayer intentions out loud, if they are willing to share. Offer all of your intentions to Our Lady. While praying the Rosary, go around the room and take turns saying each decade. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious meal together and take time to catch up with your family or friends.
Pumpkins and chrysanthemums may be seasonal, but dedicating your garden to Our Lady is a year-round devotion. Whether you tend a few potted plants or a full garden bed, add a special touch to your fall garden with a statue of Our Lady as a focal point. You could even add stepping stones to represent each decade. Sit in the quiet space and contemplate each mystery of the Rosary.
This fall, make a cozy, Marian feast for your family or friends. You can’t go wrong cooking anything with rosemary, the famous Marian herb. It could be as simple as a chicken noodle soup with a rosemary garnish and a warm loaf of sourdough with butter. For dessert, you could bake a cake and ice it with blue frosting in honor of Our Lady. Meals are a wonderful way to gather together and celebrate special feast days and create lasting family traditions.
You don’t need a special occasion to gift someone a rosary. You never know whose day you might touch or who you might inspire toward a newfound devotion to the Holy Rosary. Holding on to the physical beads provides a tangible way to stay grounded and present while praying.
St. Maximilian Kolbe once said, “Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin Mary too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.” That being said, we could always learn more about Our Blessed Mother. Dive deeper into your devotion to Our Lady and the Rosary this month by opening up a devotional. Take the devotional to adoration or read it while you sip on your morning cup of coffee.
The beauty of prayer is that it can happen anywhere, and a rosary is easy to carry wherever you go. Whether the Holy Rosary has been part of your daily rhythm for years or is a new addition to your routine, Our Lady is always here waiting to receive your intentions and present them to her Son. Let Mary wrap her loving Mantle around you as you pray, "Hail Mary, Full of Grace…”
Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!
“Go to the Madonna. Love her! Always say the Rosary. Say it well. Say it as often as you can! Be souls of prayer. Never tire of praying, it is what is essential. Prayer shakes the Heart of God, it obtains necessary graces!”
~ St. Padre Pio
