The St. Benedict Medal, though its exact origin is unknown, was formally approved by Pope Benedict XIV in 1741. The most recognized version today is the Jubilee Medal, created in 1880 to mark the 1400th anniversary of St. Benedict’s birth. The front depicts St. Benedict holding a cross and the Rule of his order, with symbols referencing attempts on his life and inscriptions seeking protection at death. The back features a cross surrounded by Latin initials representing prayers of exorcism and protection against evil. We provide many depictions of this medal; some of them are medals, and some are items that have the design (such as hats or bracelets).
