Tradition holds that St. Stephen was a deacon and the first early Christian to suffer martyrdom for professing the divinity of Christ and following Him as the prophesied messiah. This lovely Catholic statue features him dressed in the vestments of a deacon, with the palm of the martyr, and holding the book of the Gospel with stones upon it, since he was stoned to death.
