One of the most powerful and impactful ways to support the Holy Souls is simply by praying for them. Souls in Purgatory rely on the prayers of the living because they can no longer pray for themselves. By offering up daily prayers and sacrifices on their behalf, we actively participate in a profound act of charity that helps speed their journey home to God.
St. Gertrude the Great was a Benedictine sister from the 1200s. During her life, she received visions from Christ urging her to pray and for the Holy Souls. It is believed that Christ even gave her a specific prayer to say for the poor souls. Gertrude made it her mission to encourage others to pray and have masses said for souls.
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family.
This is only one of the many prayers you can say throughout your day. There are many books and devotionals filled with prayers you can bring before the Lord. In fact, there are special chaplets and Rosaries you can pray for the poor souls. However, you don't always need a special written prayer to make a difference. Simple, spontaneous prayers offered during quiet moments, like while commuting, doing household chores, or taking a walk, are just as powerful when prayed with a sincere heart.
Beyond personal prayer, one of the most effective and special ways to support the Holy Souls is through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Because the Mass is the highest form of prayer, requesting a Mass intention for a deceased loved one or for the souls who have no one left to pray for them is a profound act of love.
During November, many churches will have a book of remembrance where parishioners can write down the names of the deceased. It serves as a reminder for the whole parish to pray and remember the souls. There are a lot of poor souls who have no one to pray for them. This book of names is powerful way of bringing people together in prayer.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) defines an indulgence as "a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints" (paragraph 1471).
From November 1 to 8, the Church grants a plenary (full) indulgence for the Holy Souls in Purgatory to anyone who devoutly visits a cemetery and prays for the dead. On any other day of the year, this cemetery visit yields a partial indulgence. In addition to the cemetery visit, you must go to confession and receive the Eucharist. Ideally, this would all be done on the same day but it can be done a few days before or after the visit. Another indulgence for the Holy Souls in Purgatory is given if you piously visit a church on All Souls Day and pray one Our Father and the Apostles' Creed. The Church also encourages people to pray for the pope by saying one Our Father and one Hail Mary.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
When we lose a loved one, the world around us can seem so dark. Bring the light of Christ into your homes and light a candle in remembrance of the deceased. Display photos of those who have gone before you and pray by candle light. Pray for the repose of their souls and ask Our Lord to bring you comfort as you grieve their presence. In addition, you can visit a church, make a donation, and light a candle for your loved ones.
No matter what challenges you face this month, consider offering them up for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Practicing small acts of self-denial, patiently enduring daily inconveniences, or performing acts of charity on behalf of the deceased are powerful ways to assist them. You could skip a favorite treat or meal during November and dedicate that small sacrifice to a soul who has no one left to pray for them. Additionally, donating to a local charity or performing a corporal work of mercy in memory of a deceased loved one carries immense spiritual value. Find small ways to offer things up for the poor souls this month!
November serves as a gentle reminder that our relationship with our loved ones doesn't end when they leave this world. It continues on in a different way. One of the spiritual works of mercy is to pray for the living and the dead. By offering prayers, attending Mass, visiting cemeteries, lighting candles, and offering up our daily sacrifices, we actively and piously participate in a timeless work of spiritual mercy.
As you go through this month, remember that every small prayer and quiet act of love makes a difference. When we assist the Holy Souls on their journey home to God, we gain powerful intercessors in Heaven who will one day pray for us, too.
"As we enter Heaven, we will see them, so many of them, coming towards us and thanking us. We will ask who they are, and they will say, ‘a poor soul you prayed for in Purgatory.'"
